I dream of taking flight in an ambiguous world filled with vague clouds and shadowed air…Then I wake up and forget the whole thing

Stargate Online

January 31st, 2006 Taniith

YAY, this is what I’ve been waiting for for years!

Ok, back-track. So I regularly read the blogs of various people, including several current and former Cyan Worlds employees. (If you don’t know who Cyan is by now….. for shame! Go here, then go buy all things Myst!)

So, while looking, I found on Bill Slease’s blog some interesting news. Bill was a key member in URU (online Myst), but when URU Live was shut down and then Cyan closed for a few weeks, he decided not to return. He’s more of an online game development type person, and Cyan was being forced away from the online market (for now! LONG LIVE URU!).

So, I learned from his blog a bit ago that he now works for Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment. Now, I liked the name…. you know, Cheyanne Mountain is where the Earth stargate is supposed to be in Stargate SG-1 lore. Well guess what? Today, it was announced that they are working on a massively multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG) based on the Stargate series! I’ve been saying it would make the perfect MMO for a while (well, that and Star Trek, which also has an MMO in production). Now, not only is it being onlineified, but it has at least one ex-Cyan employee working on it, as well as the old community manager for the Myst franchise, Katie Postma!

So, yeah…. me = happy

Course, that’ll change as soon as I go do this damned physics homework….. :(

I Will Destroy Your Soul

January 30th, 2006 Taniith

So, something interesting happened to me today. First though, let me preface this story. Anyone who has known me for a few years probably remembers my old persona…. cold, rarely joking, not caring about the fact that he had no friends. Oh, and often in a foul mood, taking great offense to comments made in jest. You know, not a great personality.

Well, I thought that part of me was dead and gone….. until today. You see, my emotional state has been in flux for the past month or so (as with other poasts, if you don’t know you shouldn’t). So apparently, old parts of myself have started surfacing.

So, on to the story. Today for lunch we had “clam rolls.” As one of my friends put it, “its the one lunch even the teachers wont eat.” AKA, it is quite disgusting. Anyway, so I get to the lounge with some papers for Julia about the proposed set designs for our show. She and all of my other friends were walking down the hallway, and when I tried to stop her, she just told me to put it in her bag, and walked on with Marjorie. I figured, ‘hey, they have their big Mock Trial thing tomorrow, they must be off to do that.’ Not a chance. Instead, they were all going to lunch off-campus and didn’t even have the decency to ask me.

(Aside: Later, one of them cited my refusal to believe that this ‘diner’ exists as the reason for not asking me, but I would have gone if EVERYONE were going!).

Anyway, I got really steamed when I found this out, and was very angry for the next hour or so. Now, when I say angry, I really mean the aforementioned part of my personality resurfaced after like a year of being buried. It was almost…… refreshing.

Now here’s the thing, I repressed it again (mostly), but I’m not sure what is worse: that it came back at all, or that I almost enjoyed feeling that way again. Its scary, I’ll tell you that.

On a brighter note, my computer is apparently now in ‘diagnostics,’ meaning I’ll get an e-mail when they find what’s wrong, and then when they ship it out.

Oh, and if you haven’t seen the bellow poast of my artwork (which Marty now wants me to turn into a set… wth?), make sure to take a look!

Assuming some other parts of me don’t come back,

Show-off

January 29th, 2006 Taniith

Well, I was working on my independent study, drawing in perspective for now….. 3D later, and I ended up doing something M. C. Esher-esque. So I started thinking about how you can’t really do something like that in a 3D environment…. so of course I had to figure out why that was, and prove my statement wrong.

Now, I told myself that I wouldn’t work in 3D this term, just so I could get myself to concentrate on the hand-art part of all this. But I just HAD to do it! And the thing is, I think I ended up learning something interesting about 3D and perspective in the process….. which is the whole point of this term! Learn to connections between standard art and computer art, and then next term actually apply those to creating an age (ala the stuff Cyan makes for Myst games).

So anyway, here we go:
(Please do these in order…. it ruins the trick if you don’t)

The Original Drawing
My 3D Version

Note, the next image gives it all away, so don’t look until you’ve had a chance to take this in.

How It Works

I circled the two areas that are Esher-esque in the last image to make it easier to get a reference for this.

Well, enjoy. Hopefully I’ll have more of this sort of stuff in the near future!

Oh, and the copyright things are there so my work doesn’t get ripped off. I just thought that was better than what I did to the Holes poster image I put up a while ago.

Argument

January 29th, 2006 Taniith

Just in case you haven’t been keeping score, there’s quite an argument going on over here. Feel free to join in.

Oh, and read my most recent comment to it (as of writing this anyway).

More

January 28th, 2006 Taniith

Wow, I really need to hire someone to help me come up with poast titles!

Well, first of all, I forgot to mention some stuff in the OC poast. Mainly that I found it interesting that there was an actor in the episode I saw who I’m more used to seeing in sci-fi roles. He had something to do with a hospital here, but he was the doctor-hologram on Star Trek: Voyager, as well as Mr. Woolsey on Stargate: SG-1. I think that’s what gave me the strength to sit through the whole thing.

Though I must say, if any of my friends ever make me watch a stupid show like the OC and Corin Nemec shows up, I might be forced to break the TV!

Anyway, the other thing I wanted to mention is that everyone reading this should go see the French film Cache (I’m too lazy to put in the accent mark, as was the theater). It is a mystery film…. very good movie.

Oh, and when you see it, make sure to watch behind the closing credits very carefully. The theater where I saw it was nice enough to put up signs saying this, and I still managed to miss part of what happened. My mother had to tell me, and we are still trying to put it all together. I have to ask Mr. Adjout what he thought on Monday.

You know, its too bad the French Film class meets when I have Calculus, because I would love to sit in on their discussion of the movie after they go see it on Tuesday.

Anyway, until next time.

OC?

January 26th, 2006 Taniith

Did I really just sit through an episode of The OC? I’m not sure how I still exist.

Though, it did remind me of Roswel…. just with no Aliens.

I’m gonna go throw-up now to try and make the memory go away.

Oh My God

January 26th, 2006 Taniith

Yes, you read right…. I didn’t even write it as OMG, I am so elated! (is that the right word?)

Anyone who knows me, knows that I am very much a sci-fi buff. I love the stuff… when it is good anyway; you know, like the current Battlestar Galactica series…… and the older episodes of Stargate SG-1. I digress, read on!

Check this out!

A potential prototype hyperdrive in 5 years?! WOW! I mean….. WOW! Sure, there’s a good chance this wont happen, but I prefer to look at the glass as half full… of alternate universes ripe for use in faster than light travel!

Can you tell I’m excited?! (that, on the other hand, is definitely the right word).

Well, I have to go tell Esher the good news. See ya on Proklarush Taonas in a few years!
