Yep
Ok, so I should probably poast something here before certain people get on my case for not saying anything or find out from other people. So I went and got my license yesterday along with another person who was using the same driving school. Had to get up at 6:30 *oy* and was the second person of the day (behind that girl, who I ‘let’ go first ;P). Mike, the ex-marine state trooper, was really polite to the girl, but made her do a ton of stuff (even though the woman from the driving school had told us he was the ‘go around the block’ guy for Watertown). Then, I got in the front seat and he was all business. Hell, he was rushing me: “quickly adjust your mirrors and pull out”, “Come on, make this light… faster, faster!”, and in a 10mph parking lot: “Come on, just go back to my squad car, a little faster…. faster…. straight ahead…..” and so on. I guess he really didn’t want to be there, or he just decided early on that I knew what I was doing because after the (less than) two minutes spent driving around the block to get back to his car, all I had to do was parallel park. And he even stopped me in the middle of doing that, handed me my signed permit and left. That’s an ex-marine for ya ;P
So yeah. Me and my dad are currently in the process of deciding what to do about getting a car. The list currently stands at investigating used Volvos, Subarus and Hondas.

PS: To those who were requesting…. one of those more emotional/less computer and gaming oriented poasts might be quite close. Also another short story type poast ;P

Bwahaha, I have discovered your blog! :P
Nice job, though. I tried to make a blog once. Never had any patience for it, though.
And nice job on getting your license and all. :)
(P.S. It’s spelled “posting.” My brain is burning from the misspellings.)

Thanks. Always nice to get a comment from people who just stumble upon my blog ;D
Oh, and it is NOT a typo. I’m sure I’ve made better explainations, but take a look here. I guess I know what your vote would be ;p

There’s a good chance I’ll be doing similar shopping pretty soon, so I picked up a consumer reports to look into what cars are reliable.
FYI: Turns out Volvos aren’t what they used to be. Don’t let that stop you if you find one you really like, but get it really well inspected first.
I’m surprised you’re interested in a subaru, but I applaud it. Shela got one, then I got one, and I’d get another one if I were definitely going to be staying in the Northeast.
Also, if you think you’ll be schlepping a lot of stuff around for awhile, those hideously ugly but brilliantly utilitarian Scion rolling-toaster-ovens and Honda Elements are both very interesting options, and they’re priced in the 14-18k range NEW. But they are incredibly ugly.
If you find a USED car you really like, take it to Sheny’s husband’s shop in Allston and tell them you’ll pay the hourly rate to do a thorough inspection.
(If you don’t mention you’ll pay, they’ll assume you want a free, quick lookover…and you get what you pay for.)
If, after that, you have doubts about the condition of that particular car, just forget it, even if the price is good. There will be another. MILEAGE IS NOT A GOOD INDICATOR OF CONDITION: 30,000 local miles are much more stressful on the car than 60,000 highway miles.
It’ll give you an indication of whether you’re getting what you think you’re buying, and it will also give you a basis for negotiating a fair price.
g’luck!
