Ahoy There

September 26th, 2007 Kiirel

So as of around 5 O’clock today, I am official an active member of LnL. Wooo! They even gave those of us who got activated today some of the last t-shirts left over from last year (”Cam on a Snake!”). So thats cool.

And of course, the first event I got to work on as an active member was right after the meeting, when some administrative-type people set up a live burn involving a ‘mock dorm room’ on the quad…. that was kinda ridiculous, I must say. But it was fun as hell; I can only imagine what my friend Phil (did fire-fighter/emt stuff at college, now does it professionally I think) got to see at their annual live burn events. I think they did whole houses and stuff!

And of course, they managed to set the quad on fire too… but whats a little burnt grass between friends?

That didn’t come out right.

On GPA and Its Irrelevance

September 20th, 2007 Kiirel

So, I just “finished” my calculus homework for the week… and I say it like that because I’m not really sure I understand what I just did. But you know what? That’s ok. I was worried the past few weeks because I keep having trouble following what the hell we are doing (as does the rest of the class), and I think I’m going to get a B in the class (no + or - at WPI… A, B, C, or NR). I was worried because that would stop me from having the same sort of uber 4.0ish GPA I had in high school, but something just occured to me; my GPA has absolutly no relevance to anything I am going to end up doing. I have connections and recomendations already for the sorts of things I want to do, and the employers are going to care much more about my portfolio of work than about my GPA and the grade from some stupid freshman calculus class. As long as it is somewhere in the high-ish 3 area, they probably wont even give it a second glance.

Besides, by the time I graduate and have to put the GPA on my resume, I will most likely have already had a few internships or jobs that will turn into a job somehow… and the resume wont even matter!

Ah, sweet logic…. how I miss you since you got buried under indeterminate forms and infinite series.

PS… this weekend I get to try to find the Garment District on my own this time! This ought to be interesting…

Wasted Opportunites

September 12th, 2007 Kiirel

This will be short as I have to get back to work (a fact which really doesn’t help matters at the moment).

So those of you following along (or in the family) will be away of the string of deaths in the past several years (and now this will be even shorter since I couldn’t make it through that first sentence).

Well, there was just another one. Not a biological member of the family, but just as much a part of the family to me as anyone else. After my dad’s parents died and my grandmother and Ramona (the person who just passed) got worse, I knew I should go visit both of them while I had the chance. Well, I only visited my grandmother a few times before she passed, but I still didn’t get to emotional about it (which I thought made me a bad person). And I knew I had to visit Ramona before it was too late. But then things kept getting in the way and I can’t even remember the last time I saw here (and phone calls were rarely more than a hello and passing the phone to someone else). And now she’s gone, and I guess my lethargy has finally caught up to me because theres no one of that generation left. And I just feel so terrible that I wasted my opportunities… and I have no one to talk to at WPI…. no one who I really trust to have this sort of conversation with. And I don’t have the time to go home because I have way to much work to do.

And it figures that just last night I was working on my practice knitting, and I had to put it down and just do nothing for a few minutes at one point because I just started thinking how I could have done this with my grandmother if I hadn’t wasted the chance.

This is just another example of how much life sucks. I just want to…. I don’t even know! FUCK!

Five Alive

September 6th, 2007 Kiirel

I don’t know why they called it that, but I figured I might as well use the same header.

So, I don’t have the next version of Doctor Who Magazine yet (it not being published yet), but on their Facebook group they put the cover for the newest one. And guess what it says? “Doctor Who has been renewed until 2010″! Sweet, eh? Now, I suppose that says nothing about Russel T. Davies staying in charge, or even David Tennant being the Doctor that long (we can only hope), but its still good news!

I’m of to CS class for more irrelevant “intro to programming”

British Candy

September 5th, 2007 Kiirel

So I think this poast will most likely totally give away my plan for the costume (if you didn’t guess already), but I need some help here so I guess I’ll have to give it away. So, I need to find a store somewhere where I can purchase some british candy called Jelly Babies. So if anyone (hint hint Danielle) knows where I can get some, or maybe wants to get some for me and send ‘em up in early October, it would be much appreciated.

A Stitch In Time…

September 3rd, 2007 Kiirel

Wow… I really should change that title…. but its ridiculously applicable nature makes me want to leave it.

Anyway, so I think I’m gonna go for a real costume for Halloween this year; you know, unlike last year where I just wore the cloak (and proceeded to sit in something wet and uncomfortable), and the year before where I just wore a suit and called it ‘Boris.’ Now I’m not going to explicitly say what it is, but I’ll give you some hints. First, it will involve a trip to the Garment District (and maybe some other places too, if I can’t find everything). Second (and here’s the big one), I just ordered a ball of yarn and some knitting needles… I considered buying this part pre-made, but I decided against it because of cost. Besides, what kind of ***vian (you thought I would give away the costume, didn’t you? Fill in the blanks) would I be if I didn’t make it myself?

So yeah, hopefully I can figure out this knitting thing well enough to justify buying 10-15 balls of variously coloured (spelling is another hint) yarn and making the knitted object that is so integral to the outfit.

Now I just need to find time to get to Boston and the Garment District before it becomes October and EVERYONE is going there.

Oh, and I get to help out in the projection booth during Grindhouse tonight! I’m only a PIT 1 (projectionist in training), but I can still push the buttons for the house lights! ;p

TT Capsule; Type 40, Mk II

September 2nd, 2007 Kiirel

So, the first time I modeled a Type 40 TT capsule (the Doctor’s Tardis), it was somewhere around a month or so into the 3D class. It never got updated… even during my Block 3 project (the Doctor reading the book thing).

So needless to say, my Type 40 needed an upgrade. Now, the Doctor may need to go to Logopolis to get his chamelion circut fixed if he wants to change anything (though all he accomplished was to get himself killed by the Master when he did… but I digress), but me? I just start over. Oh sure, I’m re-using a few small bits here and there, but they are getting overhauls too of course. But the main body? thats been totally re-done. Not only was my old Type 40 not very stylish, but the geometry was attrocious… part of why I didn’t upgrade it was that I couldn’t without an insane amount of work (read: it would have been easier to start over). Now I have nice clean geometry, and it looks a lot nicer too (there’s not a lot you can do to make it look better, but I’ve thrown in a couple of small things). I even upgraded the light and housing on top to match what is currently on the Doctor’s Tardis.

So, here’s a few pictures of my Type 40 TT Capsule, Mk II. These were after about 2-3 hours of work (on and off over the past 2 days). I still need to model in the door (its gonna have hinges and everything this time). After that, I am going to do real texture work on it (that old one just had a couple flat materials…. aka, it didn’t look like wood). So stay tuned.
