I dream of taking flight in an ambiguous world filled with vague clouds and shadowed air…Then I wake up and forget the whole thing

WooHoo!

March 20th, 2008 Kiirel

So, the Mysterium committee announced this years location for the annual Myst convention… BOSTON! I’m so happy… the only thing that would be better would have been going to the once-every-four-years-at-Cyan Mysterium last year; but I’ll get there eventually.

Details are scarce for now, but it will be in Boston on the July 25-27 weekend.

YAY!

Its A Damned Shame

March 14th, 2008 Kiirel

You know, it strikes me as a very bad thing that the vast majority of people related to the IMGD department dismiss anything Myst related right from the start. I mean, I don’t expect people to be a part of the, dare I say it, cult, but for people who want to design games i feel that they should at least acknowledge the contribution that Myst made to gaming, and the important aspects of it that are still very relevant. Big story, beautiful art; these are two big things that Myst got right FIFTEEN YEARS AGO, and yet there are still plenty of games that don’t even come close.

And to top it off, its not just students. In a class I just came from, I mentioned Wheely and Rose dying in URU Live (as I wrote about a while back). And what was the teachers reaction? Unlike every other time someone specifically uses a game as an example, he waited for me to finish explaining and then proceeded to move on as though I hasn’t said anything.

I just think its a shame that people don’t respect the game… even if they aren’t fans.

Mother Nature Must Be Angry

March 9th, 2008 Kiirel

So, in light of the recent unfortunateness with my computer, I thought I would show you the last few projects I did on it this past term. After all, regardless of how it comes back, its going to be formatted before much more work happens on it, so these are the last big things for this incarnation of the beast.

So, here is a link to the Facebook album I’ve been keeping on assorted WPI matters. The first page includes the two 2D projects, and the 3D project begins on the second page. This isn’t on my webpage for two reasons. First, now that I think about it, Dreamweaver was only set up on the computer that has ceased to be (it is no more). Thankfully most of that is backed up (and the important bits are already up there on the web). Secondly, some of this (the 3D in particular) need to wait to go up there until I can figure out how to pull off the revamp of the page. Its going to be more project based, with information about how/why I did each project and how long various parts took. Also, it will hopefully no longer use tables or pop-up windows to function (as they are antiquated and sloppy)

Well, time to get ready for fun movie-going (and package shipping) later today… TTFN ;p

I Feel Like A Broken Record

March 8th, 2008 Kiirel

Well believe me, this is the last thing I wanted to write about as the first new Poast in a while… but it seems fate decided to laugh at me.

So guess who I got to call today? I’ll give you a hint, it starts with an A, is related to Roswell, and ends with an ‘lienware tech support’. Still stumped? I’ll just tell you: my Alienware laptop died… again. DIED AGAIN! I’ve lost fracking count of how many times I’ve had to send this thing to the depot, and its barely 2 years old! I finally get to the point where I’ve had it in usable shape for more time than it has been in service depots, and it decided to break again! Just like last time, the RAID controller seems to be dead. That means that the hard drives are unreadable until it is fixed… hopefully they will not have to be wiped while this thing is fixed, but the technician couldn’t give me any guarantees.

This is really a bad time too (when isn’t it?), for so many reasons. First on my mind is the fact that I had stuff for the Zak and Dakota project that I was working on, and now I have no workstation on which to do said work. I don’t know how Andrew is going to manage to find someone to finish this model at this point, since I’m the only one who knows how the rig works. And then theres assorted school stuff that will be much harder without a decent computer with me. Not to mention the fact that I can’t play games while it is gone. I tell you, I was leaning very far toward getting a new Boxx this summer, but now there is no doubt in my mind.

Add to that the fact that some uncertainty has popped up regarding my working at Beaver in the spring (hopefully I will get a definitive answer tomorrow), and it makes for a somewhat rotten vacation. But I suppose things could be worse… I managed to pull off A’s on everything last term, and my YuGiOh deck is getting more refined all the time. Thats right…. I said YuGiOh. *shrug*

Oh well, at least I have been jarred out of my complacency with this piece of shit… If my data survives (and only a few things are left that were not backed up), I will back it up, and reformat the thing to not use RAID at all. At least then I can access my disks if anything happens again… and I have the Boxx to look forward to in my apartment this summer.
