Talk About Shock!
You know that moment between cutting into your finger with a serrated knife and realizing that you cut into your finger with a serrated knife? You know, before the pain and blood start? Yeah, thats a good moment… everything after that moment is not so good though. I guess I’ve gotten a bit lax in my bagel cutting ways, or maybe I was overexcited about finally having bagels again. Or maybe it was that bit of the free salt bagel I got. Whatever the reason, ouch!
So I didn’t know what to do, besides apply pressure and lie down until I stopped feeling like I would pass out, so I tried to call anyone I could (starting with Danielle since I figured she has experience, what with what happened to Dan and all). Eventually, while I was trying alternate means of contacting people, Dave called back. He said, even if it looks like it might be ok and the bleeding is starting to stop, go to the emergency room anyway. I decided I’d walk to health services, since its even closer to me than the campus is, but they apparently don’t bother staying the full hours over vacation. So, I didn’t know what to do (the obvious choice was to call campus police who would send EMS, but I felt silly doing it over such a small thing)… so I *walked* to campus police. They tried to call EMS, but they weren’t sure if anyone was on duty, so they also called over the officer who is EMT trained.
Then, after chatting with the officer who came out for a few minutes, both the student and officer EMTs showed up at the same time (by chance). They decided it didn’t look too bad, handed me a band-aid, and sent me on my way.
In hind-sight, I should have just called in the first place, but the emergency stuff technically says that if you live off campus you should call 911 instead of campus police/EMS, and it seemed stupid to go all the way to a hospital and pay if I could just get EMS to give me the ok. *shrug*
Hopefully everything is fine now, and I think I’m going to buy one of those bagel slicers now. Too bad today was my big *cleanup and keep unpacking* day… there’s not much vacation left to do that!

Why do I have this really strange feeling that this happened once before? Not at WPI, obviously, but the cutting a big gash in my finger and freaking out thing.

Yeah, sorry I wasn’t able to be there to answer your question. Or really around to talk all weekend/week. Been busy and sick. Got the story from Dave, so I knew you were okay in the end. :)
Sucks though. How’s the finger doing now? Healing okay? At least it wasn’t bad enough to need stitches. :)
We should declare war on bagels. They are clearly the enemy of fingers!

No worries. At least you managed to have a good B-day before getting sick, eh?
It seems to be healing fine. Its still in that stage where it remains two distinct edges of skin with an area of no skin between them though… hopefully it’ll get past that soon so I can stop worrying about using the finger.
Yes, war on bagels. According to the EMT, they are the number one reported cause of hand lacerations ;p. I still blame that strange salt bagel though.
