End of Time (pt1)
Just a quick bit of commentary on the episode… you probably shouldn’t look if you haven’t seen it yet.
I just watched The End of Time part 1, the first half of David Tennant’s last Doctor Who episode. Holy crap! I knew one person that was coming back, both from prophecy a few episodes back (”he will knock 4 times, and then you will die”, or something like that), and also from the small number of spoilers I’ve accidentally stumbled on. But even then, it was great.
But the thing that really hit me was the end. When the Narrator guy first appeared on screen, I said to myself “those clothes he’s wearing…. he can’t be a *what he is goes here*”. And then it was in the back of my mind the rest of the episode. So then, I had to try and identify the woman that keeps talking to Wilf. It may be a shot in the dark, but I think it’s Romana. According to RTD back in series 1, she was Lord President of Gallifrey back when the last great Time War occurred. She was the one who offered the Master to the Daleks in the 1996 movie, and then she was the leader in the war. That’s probably how the Doctor got involved; Romana asked for his help I bet. And given what happens at the end of this episode, I can see how she might show up and try to protect the Doctor, but why he can’t know she’s there.
Anyway, I was joking with my friend Adam after I watched Waters of Mars. I commented on how it made sense that the Doctor regenerate into a younger body, because he has too much baggage and needs a fresh start. He needs to grow up again, without the Time Wars and the Daleks and the Master and all that. And then, I suggested, what if the Time Lords came back. What if Gallifrey was restored and the Doctor was at once praised for his service and punished for destroying the Time Lords to stop the Daleks. And so they force him to regenerate into a kid. Maybe they refill his regeneration count or something. I think this could all work!
But then I saw End of Time pt1. They get to the part where the Master’s plan is about to take place and I thought to myself, “oh, it works based on a template… he’s going to turn everyone into Time Lords and turn Earth into Gallifrey!”. But then, he didn’t. And then they zoomed out to that narrator again, and I saw his clothes again, and they still looked like what I was theorizing. And then they zoomed out a little, and we could see the guy behind him with the full outfit and head-dress…. and there it was. It sounds like I wasn’t entirely right about the motives, but I can’t believe he did that. I can’t believe it.
And yet I can. And I just can’t wait to see what happens next week! She remembers, he’s a thousand clones, they are insane, and the Doctor will die.
Epic.
